I created this blog because I want to share and further explore some of the homesteading projects and philosophies and how we can incorporate into our suburban lives.
I think if we can step back a little and look at the impact of our modern suburban life on our environment, our wellbeing, our creative energy, and ultimately our pocketbook (and our grandchildren's pocketbook), we will find we can do a lot better.
Since the suburban households make up for much of the American population, making even minor changes individually, will have a significant impact nationally/globally. For you, I think you will find making some minor improvements will make you feel much better (and won't cramp your lifestyle). It is deeply satisfying to create something with your own hands and also makes you feel good because you know it's having a positive impact on the environment.
For example, the day I started composting, I was surprisingly giddy. Instead of feeling bad about my food and garden scraps going into the landfill and sewer (garbage disposal), it was now going to yield the best dirt possible for my small vegetable garden. Additionally, I am going to save money since I will not have to buy compost.
Another project that I couldn't believe was so fun, simple, and inexpensive was growing my own sprouts from seeds. It's one of the easiest things to grow and it tastes delicious!
In the coming posts, I will share with you more about composting, sprouts and lots of other homesteading and quasi-homesteading ideas and projects. I think once you see how easy some of these practices/projects are to incorporate into your life, you will be surprised how fun and satisfying it is to be a SuburbanHomesteader.
